Japan Cup - Glossary Of Terms

Chichi-Naikokusanba:
In Japan, the progeny of Japanese-bred sire are called Chichi-Naikokusamba ('Chichi' means 'father', 'Naikokusan' means 'bred inside the country' and 'ba' means 'horse'). When a Chichi-Naikokusanba wins a race where non-Chichi-Naikokusamba also participate, additional winning prize money will be paid to its owner. (I heard that this kind of rule exists in France, too.)

Gaikokusanba:
In Japan, horses who belong to Japanese stables but were bred outside Japan are called Gaikokusanba('Gaikokusan' means 'bred outside the country'). Generally, Gaikokusanba is less expensive to buy than non-Gaikokusanba in Japan. Instead, they cannot participate in the classic races(such as Satsuki-SHO, Derby, Kikka-SHO, Oka-SHO and Oaks) and Tenno-SHO(Emperor's Cup).

JRA:
(See Also) Japanese Racing Association. Central racing association of Japan. This site will mainly show JRA races.

NAR:
(See Also) National Association of Racing. Association beween regional racecourses in Japan. Some horses belonging to NAR challenge to the JRA racing, or JRA horses participate in the interchange races held at NAR tracks. For more detail, please see JRA webpage.

Shijo Torihikiba:
Meaning 'a horse traded in a sales'. In Japan, most horses were traded directly between owners and breeders. In order to encourage the horse trading in the sales, JRA gives additional winning prize to a Shijo Torihikiba who won the race which non-Shijo-Torihikiba also participate.
